POST TYPE · TEACH
Promise one outcome, give the steps in order, and name the step people skip. The post works when someone can follow it without asking you anything.
THE SHORT ANSWER
A how-to post names the outcome in line 1 (“How to … in ten minutes”), then gives three to five numbered steps, each one action that starts with a verb, and ends with the step people usually skip. Steps make a natural slide post: one step a page.
The outcome
Line 1: how to get one result, and how long it takes.
The steps
Three to five, numbered, each one action starting with a verb.
The trap
The step people skip or rush, and what it costs them.
The ask
One line inviting them to try it, or to tell you how it went.
Copy it and fill in the brackets.
How to [get one result] in [time]: 1. [Verb] [first action]. 2. [Verb] [second action]. 3. [Verb] [third action]. The step people skip: [step] — and it is why [what goes wrong].
EXAMPLE — written for a made-up fitness studio.
How to build a 20-minute workout you will actually do, in five minutes: 1. Pick three moves you already know. 2. Do each for 40 seconds, rest 20. 3. Repeat the round four times. 4. Put it in your calendar for tomorrow, not “sometime”. The step people skip: number 4. The plan is easy; the appointment is what makes it happen.
